A legal nurse consultant (LNC) is a registered nurse with clinical experience who applies that expertise to legal cases involving medical issues. LNCs review medical records, prepare chronologies, screen cases for merit, evaluate standards of care, and support attorneys through discovery, mediation, and trial preparation.

A legal nurse consultant is a behind-the-scenes consultant who organizes and interprets records, identifies clinical issues, and helps counsel develop case strategy. A medical expert witness is retained to give sworn testimony on the standard of care or causation. Many cases benefit from an LNC early to determine whether an expert witness is even warranted.
